Our mission is to be a reliable, safe producer of coal, while diversifying the Nation's energy resources to create economic and environmental sustainability for the Navajo people and to develop and operate an energy company that values the Navajo Nation, its people, its resources, now and in the future.


About

Navajo Transitional Energy Company, LLC, is a wholly owned limited liability company of the Navajo Nation that was authorized by the Navajo Nation to purchase Navajo Mine in 2013. Navajo Mine is located on the Navajo Nation, south of Farmington, New Mexico. The Navajo Mine currently supplies coal to the Four Corners Power Plant. Navajo Mine has provided coal to the Four Corners Power Plant for 50 years. Bisti Fuels Company, LLC, a subsidiary of North American Coal Corporation currently operates Navajo Mine on behalf of NTEC.

Our Goals

  • Develop and manage safe, efficient, technology-driven, energy production with an emphasis on low cost, coal mining operations.
  • Develop and operate an energy company that is accountable to the Navajo Nation government and the Navajo people.
  • Protect the Navajo People’s and Navajo Nation’s economic and financial best interests related to mining.
  • Promote and develop the Navajo Nation’s natural resources and new sources of energy resources with regard to the Navajo Nation’s land, air, water, natural, and economic resources.
  • Develop the economic, financial, social, and cultural well-being of the Navajo People, the Navajo Nation, and its future generations through the development of its energy portfolio and market.
  • Act as an arm of the Navajo Nation with accountability to the Navajo People and the Navajo Nation.

  • Jobs for nearly 360 salaried and hourly employees with a total approximate payroll of $40 million, nearly 80% are Native American.
  • Income for local businesses – $61 million spent annually on materials, supplies & contracts with vendors for Navajo Mine.
  • Charitable contributions in 2017:  
    • $480,345 to Navajo and San Juan United Way. 
    • $200,000 to 24 non-profit organizations in region.
    •  $20,000 in Chapter Scholarships to Navajo students. 
    •  NTEC contributes approximately $35 million annually to the Navajo Nation General Fund, which provides supplemental funds for essential governmental services for divisions, departments and Chapters.
